The Porch House in Missouri Is a New Take on Modern Farmhouse for Under $1M

The “porch house” in Springfield, MO, was created to “reference the traditional forms of farmhouses but also speak to something distinctly modern,” according to its creator, the architecture firm Hufft.

Part of the goal was achieved—as you may have guessed from the home’s name—in the ginormous porch. Or, in architect speak, “a large east and south facing ten foot cantilevering canopy that provides dramatic cover.”

Listed for $989,900, the five-bedroom, 4.5-bath home sits on 3.11 acres of rolling Missouri hillside, with views of the James River Valley and Springfield Lake. The 1,500-square-foot porch runs along two sides of the house, and provides a shaded outdoor room, outdoor kitchen, and focal point for one-half of the L-shaped, 5,651-square-foot home.

On the porch side of the home are the public spaces: an open kitchen, a massive fireplace, and dining and living space, all opening to the porch through walls of windows. The kitchen is equipped with high-end appliances, stone countertops, an island, and wood-topped bar.

This look is a clean version of the modern farmhouse style: White tiles and wood, sea foam–colored cabinets, and gray brick come together to create a palette that is crisp but warm.

The more private side of the house includes the master suite and master bath. The latter has dual sinks, a soaking tub, and a walk-in shower.

The finished basement has a gym and safe room, and the office is on the second floor. A whole-house generator provides backup electricity in case of a storm—making this the perfect place to wait out a zombie apocalypse in style.

There’s also a three-car garage, four-stall horse barn (with a bar!), and guesthouse. The porch house has been featured in Dwell, Houzz, and Remodelista, and we’re willing to bet it’s the most porch you can buy for under $1 million these days.
