Marilyn Monroe & Joe DiMaggio Lived Here (and So Can You!)

Marilyn Monroe Joe DiMaggio Honeymoon House For Sale

I love anything to do with old Hollywood history, so my ears perked up when I heard that the Spanish Revival-style home that Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio once rented in Los Angeles is for sale. I featured her house in Brentwood when it was on the market, but I didn’t know anything about this one.

When I was researching it, I learned the house was on the market last year, too. I found the old listing photos that showed the exterior was a lot more colorful then. I kind of prefer the white, but take a look and see what you think!

The exterior is entirely white now, but here’s how it looked when it was for sale last year (below):

According to The Real Deal, it was then owned by novelist Roger L. Simon.
I found the front of the house as it looked then on Streetview (minus his face – I added that, ha):

The exterior and interior were painted white by the current owners (below):

Realtor Neal Baddin says they planned a major renovation of the house but changed their minds.

Records show Simon purchased it in 1989 for $685,000 from actor Bronson Pinchot.

As an aside, who remembers his show on the DIY Network?
Pinchot collected old houses in a Pennsylvania town and restored them. I wrote about it here in 2012.

But I digress. Back to Marilyn and Joe.
An authenticated rent check for the property, written by Monroe herself, was auctioned off for $1,000.

It shows they paid $237.82 for the rent in 1952.

According to the auction materials for that rent check:

“Marilyn moved into the house on December 15, 1952, when she was seeing Joe DiMaggio and he was still married. He became a permanent feature there, inviting friends over for meals while Marilyn was beginning to learn to cook, trying to show Joe how she was settling down.”

This is the kitchen she was learning to cook in.
The listing says it’s been renovated, but it’s not difficult to imagine Marilyn using it in the 1950s.

The house has 4 bedrooms + 5 baths, with 3,620 sq ft.

The listing says:

This was the Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio Honeymoon Home in 1953! Reminiscent of the beautiful Amalfi Coast, this walled and gated Mediterranean home is located on one of the best streets in the Outpost Estates.

An article on Realtor.com says:

You won’t find this gorgeous Spanish Revival home in Los Angeles on many lists of Marilyn Monroe’s known residences.

However, those who’ve lived in the neighborhood for decades have tales to tell of America’s most glamorous movie star and her second husband, New York Yankees legend Joe DiMaggio. The celebrity couple were seen in the home before and during their brief marriage in 1954.

“It sits on almost an acre of land, which is sizable for this historic neighborhood in the hills north of Hollywood Boulevard.”

The Spanish Revival-style house was built in 1938.

The property has a “Flat grassy yard with a picturesque grotto-like pool and spa overlooking the full canyon.”

Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio were married in 1954, but they divorced less than a year later.

They remained close after their divorce, however. Joe famously sent six long-stemmed roses to Marilyn’s grave twice a week, every week, for the rest of his life.

P.S. I still love Marilyn’s house in Brentwood. I featured it when it was for sale here:
