Former MLB Star Mark Ellis Selling Sportsman’s Paradise in Scottsdale for $8M

Former MLB second baseman Mark Ellis has listed his sprawling estate in Scottsdale, AZ, for just under $8 million.

Sitting on more than an acre in an exclusive enclave called Horseshoe Canyon Estates in North Scottsdale, the 10,000-square-foot home was built in 2012 with six bedrooms and 8.5 bathrooms.

An athlete’s playground, the home’s basement is outfitted with a batting cage, climbing wall, and bathroom with steam shower. It opens to an outdoor retreat with a basketball court, pool, and lounge area. There’s also guest quarters, including private entrance and parking on the main level.

Besides its sheer size and luxe amenities, the home’s interiors were overseen by design guru Nate Berkus. The result is a mansion with a rich yet neutral color palette and high-end finishes, including leather floors in the master closet. There’s also a main bath with outdoor shower, generous built-ins, and a fireplace in the master bedroom.

Over the course of his 12-year career in the MLB, Ellis manned second base for the Oakland Athletics, Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Dodgers, and St. Louis Cardinals. He retired after the 2014 season with 105 home runs.

“It was definitely time,” Ellis told the San Francisco Chronicle in 2015. “My kids are getting older, and I kind of realized it was time to do something else.”

After that, Ellis and his wife, Sarah, and their three kids retreated to this lovely piece of Arizona desert. Their decision to sell will be a big upgrade for a buyer in search of a sunny (and sporty!) retreat.
